Remote work has become a crucial part of our lives in the past several years. Even 10-15 years ago, we only dreamed of being able to work from home.

However, some employees are still not sure: do they need to work remotely or not. Today we propose to discuss the main advantages of this solution. What are the benefits of working remotely?

What is remote work? 

Remote work is a special type of work duties, where you do not need to go to the office every day. There are two types: freelancing and remote work.

Freelancing is a way of earning money without being employed and without a specific employer. The freelancer himself looks for customers, performs duties himself, concludes contracts for services, and keeps track of payment. He has no limit on the amount of work and schedule. The main thing is to fulfill obligations qualitatively and on time. 

Remote work is different. This is a full-time employee who is attached to the organization by an employment contract and the norms of the Labor Law. A remote worker is also protected by all social norms, as well as an ordinary employee of the enterprise. He has all the privileges and responsibilities of a regular employee.

Remote work is appreciated by many companies around the world: small and medium-sized businesses, and large corporations. It became especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic when the whole world came to a standstill. A few statistics for today: 

  • 16% of companies worldwide work remotely;
  • 76% of office workers worldwide want to continue working from home after COVID-19;
  • more than 80% of employees hope their employer will keep them working remotely;
  • 73% of all departments will have remote employees by 2028.

Companies like Twitter, Facebook, HubSpot, Coinbase, Shopify, and others are working with Remote work employees.

In May 2020, Twitter CEO and founder Jack Dorsey ( at the time ) sent an email to all employees of Twitter telling them not to return to their offices after the pandemic and to continue working remotely from home if they are able and willing to do so.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong also kept the majority of positions remote. At various times, between 20% and 60% of the cryptocurrency exchange’s employees worked remotely. 

Shopify is an online platform that offers e-commerce and point-of-sale services. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke aims to create a “digital by default” company. Therefore, he has decided that the “office” days are over and most employees will work.

Mark Zuckerberg announced that up to 50% of Facebook employees could work remotely within the next 5-10 years. The company supported the requests of employees and even provided financial assistance of $1000 for technology and furniture for the home office.

HubSpot has been named a top employer for 2020 by job search site Glassdoor. The reason is simple: HubSpot’s corporate culture is all about people. The company’s mission statement includes the tenet, “We believe that businesses can grow by keeping their conscience and succeed by keeping their soul.” That’s why remote work, an important employee requirement, is utilized.

  • employers in the U.S. save $11,000 per year per remote employee by cutting costs. 

Each remote employee saves time, freeing up space for personal business and the opportunity to relax. They also reduce their costs: transportation, food to the office, clothes, parking, and more.

Increase your motivation

It is difficult for remote resources to switch from home to work mode, which can lead to missed deadlines or, conversely, overwork and long shifts. It is important to maintain a work-life balance to ensure the healthy motivation of the company’s employees. 

To solve this problem, firstly, it is recommended to define work schedules and clear time frames for different processes. You can use the Scrum method of step-by-step planning, which is very popular both in small companies and large corporations.

Also, you should not forget about material motivation. A remote employee should have access to the same list of incentives as a regular employee in the office.

A special form of motivation can be the support of the employee in the design of the workspace: compensation for the purchase of equipment, opting for electricity and Internet. These measures will eventually have a positive impact on the employee and his motivation to work. He will not feel lonely at work.

Of course, there are many challenges to working remotely. 

  • It is difficult to maintain the work-life balance of an employee. There are no coworkers nearby, no supervisor. No one physically controls the fulfillment of labor duties and is not motivated to work. Often it affects the efficiency of the employee, the efficiency decreases, and delays and non-fulfillment of plans appear. 
  • There are other problems: the employee perceives remote work too strongly. Constant overwork appears. There is no time for personal life at all. To maintain a work-life balance there are a few tips:
  • Formulate a work schedule and stick to it;
  • Put away gadgets and all distractions (social media, streaming channels, and so on);
  • Use the Tomato Method and plan for rest in labor;
  • introduce small physical exercises during breaks, and so on.

Low physical activity

Remote employees often suffer from illnesses that are caused by low physical activity. If previously the employee spent time on the way to the office, and at least this motivated to move, then with remote work, unnecessary movements are minimized. However, this is solved very simply: plan not only rest and work but also physical training. In addition, the time freed from the road can be spent on your favorite sport, not on the road.

Technical problems

Very often, an employee is left with technical problems 1:1, with no one to help him. This is demotivating and reduces productivity. However, many companies work with this problem and are willing to come to the aid of their employees.

Family misunderstanding

Strangely enough, this is also a frequent cause of employee problems. Many families have traditional views. Therefore do not appreciate remote work or freelancing, believing that it is not serious and just a waste of time.

Remote work is a real chance for many people. A chance to gain invaluable experience, a chance to travel, to increase your circle of acquaintances.  Remote work also includes professional development, international communications, and opportunities to work for the largest companies in the world, and still stay at home. Modern people and the modern economy can no longer imagine themselves without remote work. And that’s fine, let businesses and employees take every chance to develop and optimize their business and get more benefit from their experience.
